Shallowhalo is the project of NYC-based producers Allyson Camitta and Ezra Tenenbaum. Playing in separate bands, Allyson in Turtlenecked and Ezra in EZTV and Ezrat, the two had never collaborated until reuniting post-breakup and mid-pandemic in summer 2020. Channeling their mutual love of oddball pop groups like Chris & Cosey, Book of Love and Magnetic Fields, they released a string of home-spun recordings, as well as a single on Brooklyn label Fire Talk in 2021. On their debut full-length, No Fun (out May 20, 2022 via Dino Records), the pair refine their off-kilter soundscapes, hi-NRG pulses and spidery melodies to craft buoyant synthpop fantasia. Camitta’s lyrics often collage humor and sincerity, as on “X-Ray Vision”, an unapologetic kiss off to cat callers and “Ring Pop”, which deconstructs her banal upbringing in suburban Southern California. The album also features additional production by friends and collaborators Sam Glick of Test Subjects, May Rio and Harrison Smith of Turtlenecked.
